The easiest way to get fans is to find your audience. Being that I draw a transgendered comic I have links and such on many other trans sites. Also I use a very simplistic style that appeals to many people. Writers have it a bit harder in that sense cuz they have to rely on the readers' imagination....which let's face it, some aren't that creative. You could describe something in detail and by the time you got to the second sentence they'd declare "BORING!" and go watch tv lick some drywall, anything so that they don't have to put forth effort in their entertainment.

Basically imagine talking to a little kid about fuel injection systems, they're going to be bored to tears. Now if you go to racing fan and talk about the same thing they'll go on for hours. Expect some exceptions to the rule but overall just find your audience and you'll be set.
